Rising Sun Series

Nara blowing gold dust over the landscape.

On the 99th day of my 100 paintings challenge I did a painting of a red-crowned crane. For this painting I drew on my love of Japanese screens, the stylized animals, trees, plants, and scenes that grace these refined yet practical art pieces. The cranes themselves are elegant, their form is beautiful whether flying, standing or dancing. I combined these elements, creating a scene that one would like to step into. Someplace a little magical, with the colors heightened, and with clouds made of gold. The crane is a symbol of gratitude, and without planning it, it was a way saying “thank you” to all of my collectors and friends that had participated in the Century Watercolor Extravaganza.

From this one painting sprang a whole new series. People have responded to these paintings, and they have commissioned me to make them their own crane painting. This has been a joyful series to create, I am along for the ride, and enjoying every minute of it.

Wanderer in Touch

A red-crowned crane lands on remote snowy shores by the light of the early morning. This painting is all about the motion of the crane’s wings as he expertly makes a landing, breaking his speed to alight gently upon the snow. I switched to landscape dimensions to give the crane room to make the landing, and because I wanted to feature the bird strongly in the foreground.

Am I Blue?

I wanted to maintain the essence of the Rising Sun series, but bring it home to a California landscape. When I was living in the Lake House I enjoyed the company of a resident Great Blue Heron. In the evening he would glide over the house, the sound of the wind rushing over his wings amplified by the surface of the lake. The first time I heard it I thought a light plane was making a crash landing, the sound being so loud.

Upward Gaze

Red Crowned Cranes are uncommonly beautiful. They are also one of the few species that traverse the Himalayas in their annual migration. They do not frequent the tropics. "Upward Gaze" depicts a gaze from Hawaii or Fiji, or, perhaps Tahiti where plumeria grow abundantly. If you look northward, in the far distance you will find them.

Mindless Dancing

This watercolor depicts two red-crowned cranes dancing simply for the enjoyment and pleasure of dancing. This painting is taller than the other paintings in this series (18"x6") and the additional real estate gave me lots of room for a dynamic and full background with plenty of depth for the pair of ecstatic birds.

Wetlands Romance

This watercolor depicts two red-crowned cranes in a mating dance. If you are unfamiliar with red-crowned cranes and their habits and behaviors you might want to Google them and check out the images and a few YouTube videos. They are extraordinary and entertaining creatures.

Evening Declaration

A lot of people respond to these paintings of red-crowned cranes. This is another commissioned piece, and I loved doing it. I am excited to explore these Japanese screen-inspired images further using brilliant color and bold landscape elements with the gold leaf clouds. I get dazzled in the process!

Gods of the Marshes

My love of Japanese screens, or “byobu” is reflected in “Gods of the Marshes”, which is what Red-Crowned Cranes are known as. This is the first of this series, which is named “just now…” for lack of a better idea. The paintings will be mostly vertically oriented, narrow in their width, as if they are being painted as a panel in a Japanese watercolor and gold leaf screen. I am loving the play of vibrant watercolor and gold.
