Pure Land - Pure Water

A celebration of the beautiful...a bobcat in the early morning light. Sonoma county in the springtime, or a place in your imagination, or from a dream. The bobcat was inspired by one that I had a particularly strong connection with when we lived on an apple orchard in western Sonoma County. I would often see him hunting or sunning in the orchard just outside my studio window.

Deer are always around. I have lived among them for many years, and they are a constant. It has given me the opportunity to observe them closely...even in childhood. They are subtle, delicate creatures. They move on the land like apparitions in the mountains and canyons. Sometimes they seem to appear and then disppear magically before your eyes.

Lions have been on my mind recently, their power, strength, and presence. I envisioned a lion in his domain, looking out over a wide and distant landscape. I sketched the lion first, wanting him to be alive and grounded. Then the waters, hills, and mountains that surround him came into focus. This is a magical place, it is somewhere that we intuit, or a feeling from our childhood that we just can’t put words to. A step through the looking-glass, where sunset meets a deep blue sky lit up by the full moon and stars. A place of infinite Mystery.

I like this fox. He exhibits clear-eyed attention and seems to be enjoying whatever his gaze is falling upon.

Red foxes have been around a lot lately. The day I started sketching this painting a fox appeared on our daily walk, and then disappeared just like that. Foxes are tricksters.

Falcons and hawks...and of course, eagles. They are all fascinating and beautiful. This small merlin falcon is stretching his wings in preparation for an early morning flight.

This scene is viewed from outside the reef of Lion’s Lap on the island of Naitauba in Fiji. The point that is shown is known as “The Tail of the Horse”. The humpback whale is circumnavigating the island. He is “Taking A Lap” at Lion's Lap.

I hold owls in high regard. All of the beings around us are full of lessons. I don't laugh at the notion of the wise, old owl. I have observed owls in their place. They demonstrate an economy of life and wisdom that reminds me of my possibilities and my responsibilities.

Hummingbirds captivate me ; their agility, speed, beauty, and stamina. I admire the way they gather nectar, artfully maneuvering to each flower. This painting is an ode to hummingbirds. I created a coastal home for this bird, with fuchsia to feed on. I wanted the painting to be bright and joyful, with a feeling of abundance.

This was inspired by "Prapatti", a painting that I did during the Century Watercolor Extravaganza. I wanted to explore this image more, the movement of the waves in conjunction with the tern. The tern is about to dive into the giant wave, and is absolutely confident and going for it.

A large koa tree stands on a cliff overlooking the tide of the South Pacific. The night sky holds a full moon, the Milky Way shining above. This painting was done for a close friend, and was a joy to do.
