The Pure Land Series is my “stepping through the looking glass” world. For these paintings I draw on imagination; a feeling sense of a remembered place, a “somewhere” that I have visited before. Each painting features an animal living in the wild; in harmony with the land. These landscapes are rich with color, with green hills, blue mountains, and clear waters. Stylized gold leaf clouds and the full moon and stars lend an otherworldly quality to the scenes. This series is a celebration of the beautiful natural world, and an intentional feeling prayer for the healing and regeneration of the Earth and the creatures that live here.
The Pure Water series is an ode to water in all of its forms. The water is stylized; shown in a combination of natural representation and exaggerated forms. These paintings are considered compositions of water, land, sky, and animals. The composition of each painting is crucial. I look for balance and at the same time motion with an eye to the interplay of the different elements. I use bright tones of blues, turquoise, and whites for the water, and I saturate the paper with these colors. I am attracted to water, intrigued by it, moved by it. I like to spend time looking at water, watching the way it moves, observing the patterns and rhythms that are always present. Sunlight on water, the dancing beauty of those two together, well, there’s just nothing better. Moonlight on the water is wonderful, too!
