Peaceful Cooperation

This is a painting of the lovely monarch butterfly, Princess Buttercup. She was raised from a caterpillar, and blossomed into this fine young woman. After emerging from the chrysalis, she stayed with us for some days. She drank the nectar of flowers, charged up with energy from the sun, and exercised her wings. Then one afternoon she lifted off on a gentle breeze, and flew south for the winter.

A Horse Appears

This painting is of a wild horse in a verdant land. The horse is running through open land that is rich with grasses. I painted the horse first and then painted the land around the horse from my imagination. The waterfall, rocks, and hills are lit by soft dawn light.

Horse in the Winter Wild

This was a commissioned piece that is the third painting in a triptych. The collector had a specific vision in mind, a wild horse emerging from a snow bank, with an explosion of snow below him. She wanted the horse to have strength, movement, and spirit. I used a combination of watercolors and sumi ink for this painting; the sky and trees and rocks are sumi ink, and the horse and snow and plants are painted with watercolor.

Swim Me to the Moon

This painting was commissioned by a collector, as part of a triptych that started with my painting “Grace Snows”. She envisioned a continuation of that scene, a night sky with snow falling, with koi swimming in a pond and the full moon above them. I used sumi ink for the night sky and the trees and rocks, and watercolor for the koi, water, and the plants.

Grace Snows

This is a painting I made as a gift to my dear friend Crane on his 80th birthday. Crane is a most elegant, gracious, heart-felt, and exemplary human being. As I painted it for him I listened to him singing opera, and let his voice and the music flow into the painting.

Wisdom

How would you like to be like an owl? The more the light shines on you, the less you see. I lived in a cabin in the woods of west Sonoma County. Owls lived in those woods too. On our back deck we had a fountain with a light that shone up through a waterfall. A pair of owls visited that fountain many nights. They would perch on the sloped roof above the fountain. It was an honor to have them there, and a wonder to see them.

Wanderer in Touch

A red-crowned crane lands on remote snowy shores by the light of the early morning. This painting is all about the motion of the crane’s wings as he expertly makes a landing, breaking his speed to alight gently upon the snow. I switched to landscape dimensions to give the crane room to make the landing, and because I wanted to feature the bird strongly in the foreground.

Respite

I have a particular fondness for swallows. I had a recording of "The Happy Prince" by Oscar Wilde when I was a child. The imagery of far off lands described in the story, and the love and dedication that the swallow demonstrated to the prince was inspiring and an example of how I felt the world should be. It was as if the swallow were the incarnation of love.

Native Gaze

One day I began a sketch of a bobcat, drawing from my memory of seeing one a few years before. As I was drawing I wished that I could see one again, so that I could really get the feeling of the cat. Later that morning as I was driving down my driveway a bib bobcat crossed the road and ran up the hill. I stopped the car to get a good look at him, and he stopped and looked directly at me. It was a thrilling moment. Now I could begin the painting. During the time that I was working on this painting the bobcat took to hunting in the apple orchard outside my window. I would see him almost every day. The day that I finished the painting I met the bobcat in the same spot on the driveway, and we looked at each other again. After that I never saw the bobcat on the property again. It was a mysterious and wonderful experience, and this painting was inspired and informed by the beauty and spirit of the bobcat.

Merlin

I really got into birdwatching when I lived in Bodega Bay, a seaside town right on the migratory trail of a great variety of birds. I took long walks on the beach and around the wetlands, binoculars in hand, and had great “oh, look!” moments. One day I saw a falcon fly overhead that I didn’t recognize, I later found out it was a Merlin. Such a beautiful bird had to be celebrated, and so this painting came to be.
